The City of Knox
The beautiful City of Knox, located some 25 kilometres South East from the Melbourne General Post Office, is one of the most populous municipalities in the state of Victoria with over 155,000 residents in 11 suburbs: Bayswater, Boronia, Ferntree Gully, Knoxfield, Lysterfield (shared with Yarra Ranges), Rowville, Sassafras (shared with Yarra Ranges), Scoresby, The Basin, Wantirna, and Wantirna South.
Established in 1963, the city was named after Sir George Hodges Knox, a distinguished soldier of the Australian Imperial Force in the 1910s (he served his country during World War I) and Speaker for the Victorian Parliament in the mid-1940s. The city continues to honour him today with its adoption of the Knox family motto: "Move and Prosper" (from the Latin Move et Proficior).
An undeniably welcoming city, Knox expresses its hospitality through the value its residents place on communal relationships. Walk through the neighbourhoods of the city's suburbs and you will find Australians from nationalities of over a hundred countries who have taken residence in Knox.
Owing to its history, the City of Knox is protective of its biologically significant locales. This is proudly displayed through its nice trees and parks, as well as through the measures it employs to protect its diverse indigenous plant and animal species.
People who want to enjoy the artistic and cultural heritage of Knox will definitely not be disappointed. The city council makes every effort to provide opportunities for residents and tourists alike to experience its art and culture throughout the year. These events and programs, held in various locations throughout the city, cater to the varying interests of Knox's residents and tourists. Some of the notable cultural centres to visit and events to experience are the Knox Community Arts Centre, Arts Link (a register for creative people in Knox), and the numerous festivals.
